Bio

Colby Chavez is entering his fourth season as the head coach of Lassen College Softball, where he has quickly established a reputation for building competitive teams, developing players, and fostering a strong academic culture. Since taking over the program, Chavez has led an impressive turnaround — going from six wins in his first season to 17 wins in his second — while ensuring success extends beyond the field. Under his leadership, the Cougars have had seven sophomores advance to play at four-year universities, maintained a graduation rate of over 90%, and produced 14 All-Conference selections and one All-Northern California honoree in just three years.

Chavez brings a diverse and accomplished coaching background to Lassen. He has served as an assistant coach with Chico State Club Baseball, head coach of the Chico Aces and Windsor Warriors, an infield coach in professional baseball for the Northern Colorado Owlz, and a private hitting and fielding instructor with DBAT Norco.

In addition to on-field success, Chavez prioritizes community involvement for himself and his athletes. He has helped organize and volunteer at the Suicide Prevention Walk, NCCA Cancer Awareness Golf Tournament, Veterans Day Breakfast, and the Veterans Cemetery flag placement. He also participates in Holiday With a Hero, helping underprivileged kids shop for sporting equipment, and runs a local youth softball camp to inspire the next generation of players.

A proud Susanville native, Chavez is a former multi-sport standout at Lassen High School, where he earned All-League honors in baseball, football, and basketball, while leading his league in batting average and fielding percentage in baseball. He continued his baseball career at Lassen Community College, earning First Team All-Conference, Academic All-Conference, and Academic All-State honors before transferring to Northeastern State University and later Chico State University.

Chavez holds an AA in Social Science for Transfer from Lassen College, a BS in Exercise Physiology from Chico State, and a Master’s in Kinesiology from Chico State with an emphasis in Sport Psychology, Coaching, and Strength & Conditioning.

He lives in Susanville with his wife, Jacqui, a former Lassen College softball player, and their son, Mateo Champ Chavez.
